With the rollout of the National Broadband Network (NBN), there have been significant increases in the capabilities of internet speed and access across Australia. As a result, there is no reason that you should pay for speeds you aren’t receiving.
With the upgrades NBN are implementing on their network the capacity has and will increase significantly. Congestion will soon be a thing of the past as the majority of issues consist of lifespan or damage issues. There are many misconceptions and misinformation passed on to consumers and it can be hard to decipher what is fact, and what is fiction.
One fact is that many houses were wired for telephony or pay TV services that initially were never intended for the internet or the amount of data that today’s society requires. The networks are capable of (or will not be far away from) handling these data needs now, but a lot of issues still remain within customer premises wiring.
Here are some common issues we come across:
Poor Wi-Fi signal is one of the leading causes of slow internet speeds. Sometimes this can be rectified by reconfiguring or relocating your router. In other instances, we can add an additional outlet to service another router or AP (Access Point), or install Wi-Fi extenders.
Incorrect wiring throughout the house can cause slow internet speeds and is quite common across home LAN networks and NBN HFC, FTTN, and FTTC Networks. Star wiring techniques used by previous network owners, DIY connections, unused old phone sockets, and corroded joints can all be contributing factors to slow internet speeds.
Sometimes splitters have been installed where no splitter is necessary, or have been used to service points in the house that are no longer in use. These devices can also be faulty or damaged. This can cause signal loss, and it is important that you factor the amount of splitters into your network design. If the signal is too weak to accommodate the amount of outlets, it can be necessary to install an in-home amplifier to boost the signal.
