With internet access now classed as an essential service over NBN’s multi-technology mix network, making sure your house is wired correctly for the network you will be connected to is essential. As a business we specialize in NBN’s HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial) networks and can install and advise on specifications that must be met. We also pre-wire for other networks that NBN utilise (FTTX, FTTN, FTTC, FTTP).
Whether you are building a new home or renovating, it is crucial that you plan ahead so you are not left with your NBN service in an undesired location or worse, cut off.
Like your water and electricity services you will want to plan out your telecommunications services beforehand. A lot of time, money and disappointment can be saved if you plan your home network correctly and plan for the future. In most cases a single location to install your NBN NTD is needed, and from there you can build your home network to suit your needs as a family or business. This should also be tied in with your other telecommunication services like your phone, data and antenna networks. Getting this right the first time can save you from repeat visits from technicians and electricians after your home is built.
Common issues we come across with clients New Build NBN/Telco services:
This is usually caused from a lack of planning. Too often customers have their NTD in a room with no data points to any other area in the house leaving them with a poor Wi-Fi signal in the areas they need it most. While advising on prewiring I recommend clients install a data point in each room for future use, this way you can install routers or boosters to give your house the best Wi-Fi coverage it can get.
Knowing which NBN network you are going to be connected to is crucial to the planning stage, and often we see houses prewired for the wrong service. In these instances clients have spent thousands of dollars setting up underground services on FTTC or FTTN when they are getting an aerial service via HFC. This is a costly lesson that often results in their internal cables being incorrect, and as the walls and ceilings are now installed the cable can no longer be run without spending a few more thousand dollars to get walls replastered and repainted.
Take the time to assess your telecommunication services before renovations start, and make sure your services are not going to be interrupted or damaged leaving you with substandard or no internet and/or landline. Talk to your builder and make sure they are aware of the telecommunication services around your home and can ensure that your NBN or internet service will be minimally impacted so you are not left with no internet or phone for extended periods of time.
Common issues we come across with clients NBN services during or after renovations:
Damaged cable will cause issues to your signal. There are cheap fix options that can be done but in the instance that your cable is damaged it is advisable to re-run a new cable as the join used to repair the damage will cause issues in the future. All devices have a lifespan, it is only a matter of time before they fail so making sure they are accessible to be replaced when they fail is crucial. For example: a cable that has been joined in a wall cavity and then plastered over will eventually need that joint replaced and to get to that join cavity access is essential. The only joins in your network cable should be at the wall plate, the PCD (Premise Connection Device) or the TAP (Termination Access Point). This way when your connectors and passive devices fail they can be accessed and repaired or replaced.
Relocating your NBN NTD away from renovation works is a good idea to make sure none of the hardware gets damaged while the builders/tradies do their work. Remembering which cables go where when they are done can be another problem. A tip I advise would be to take photos before you take it apart and use them when you go to put them back together.
We carry all necessary equipment to cater to these networks. We have all obtained our open cable licences, and have accrued the necessary knowledge and experience to make sure your NBN install goes as smoothly as possible on the day, and lasts for decades to come.
